The Northwestern Band started when lead singer Avery returned from a 4 month venture at the nation's only artists' colony exclusively for up-and-coming musicians; the Contemporary Music Center (CMC). All of the members in the band had been friends for years and done a lot of music together; they even played a small show for a friend's graduation party in a backyard-but nothing too serious. Shortly after Avery's return he asked the guys if they would be interested in playing a show in Portland, and if they liked then they could talk about continuing on. They all agreed and played for the first time as Gordon Avenue. On this first Portland show as a band they shocked the venue's staff by selling over 150 tickets, practically selling out the Satyricon (the oldest running venue in America) and quickly gaining fanship from other fans!
